Dunedin Dental Office Talks About Periodontal Disease and Arestin

Periodontal Disease is a growing concern in the medical community. Clinically, one out of every three people have some form of periodontal disease. New research is showing systemic links between periodontal disease and heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications and other serious health issues.

Periodontal Disease is an active infection in the gums. Once this infection is contracted, there is no cure for it, the best a patient can hope to do is control it. Regular maintenance visits to your hygienist and a strict home care regiment have been the prescription... up until now.

Hopkins Aesthetic & Reconstructive Dentistry is pleased to announce the addition of Arestin to our practice. Arestin is an antibiotic that is placed directly into the infection site. It will stay in that site and fight the infection for up to 21 days. Arestin is clinically proven to reduce pocket depth in teeth affected by periodontal disease.

Many insurance companies will pay for this vital antibiotic. If you suffer from periodontal disease, call our office or visit our website for more information. 727.733.1175 or www.allaboutsmiles.org

Hopkins Aesthetic & Reconstructive Dentistry, Successful Mission Trip to Peru

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mike's mission trip to Peru was a fantastic success. Dr. Hopkins traveled to Zapalla, Peru as part of a Rotary Club delegation that included a cleft palate team. They operated exclusively at the area's orphanage.

Dr. Hopkins treated 96 children during the two day clinic. All of the procedures performed were extractions, as time and equipment did not allow for more. All together, the Rotary team treated 226 dental patients and 14 cleft palate surgeries.

Dr. Hopkins and Dr. Lepeak, a long time dental friend, also brought nailpolish they had collected here in the United States, and had female members of the team polish the little girl's nails while they were in line for dental treatment.

Dr. Hopkins was also able to spend time in the orphanage visiting with the children and staff that live there. At the time of this blog, no plans have been discussed for next year's trip.

Cosmetic Dentistry Reminder About Year End Insurance Benefits

How do you like throwing away $1000?

If you don't use your dental benefits each year, that's what you do. Most insurance companies will pay up to $1000 for each family member's dental treatment. That money does not roll over into the new year. If you don't use it, you lose it!

So, if you've been putting off having your dental work done, don't delay! Begin part of your treatment this year, and finish it in the New Year to optimize your benefits. If you have questions, please call us or visit www.allaboutsmiles.org to get your work scheduled. Don't let the insurance companies keep your money!

Sedation Dentistry for the Medically Complex

There is a growing population in the patient base that can be classified as "medically complex". Loosely defined, medically complex simply means patients who have multiple medical issues that require drugs. For example, a patient who takes blood pressure medication, anti-anxiety medication and asthma medication is medically complex. There are several issues occurring in the body, with several treatment drugs to potentially interact.

Dr. Hopkins is a member of DOCS (Doctors of Oral Conscious Sedation), an organization that has devoted much time and study to the needs of the medically complex. Once upon a time, the medically complex were unable to be orally sedated to counter act the effects of dental phobia.

Thanks to new technology, the medically complex are now able to enjoy the same comfort of sedation as other patients, right here in our office! No IVs!

If you think you are part of the medically complex population and have put off your dental work, don't delay any longer! Call us today for a FREE sedation consultion. That's 727.733.1175 or www.allaboutsmiles.org.

Happy Smiles, and be safe from Gustav!

Dr. Hopkins Announces Great Success with Sedation Dentistry

Over a year ago, Hopkins Aesthetic & Reconstructive Dentistry expanded to include Sedation Dentistry in our list of services. For the past year, Dr. Hopkins has treated many people who are dental phobic, required a considerable amount of work in one sitting, or have other medical issues that make Conscious Oral Sedation an ideal choice.

We are pleased to announce that Sedation Dentistry is an unqualified success! Each patient we have seen has had an entirely positive outcome.

So, what is Sedation Dentistry and who will benefit from it?

Sedation Dentistry is a method of pharmaceutically relaxing a patient so that they can more tolerably receive treatment. Patients are not completely unconscious, and are able to remain responsive to instructions and questions. This method of sedation is delivered sublingually, so there are no IVs required! Patients' vital signs are continuously monitored throughout treatment and proper after care arranged prior to their procedure.

Patients who suffer from dental phobia, patients requiring copious amounts of treatment at one time, and patients who have medical conditions that hamper their treatment all benefit greatly from OCS. They will not recall the sounds, smells and sensations of their treatment!
